Mayo’s own craft beer inspired by a saint’s brewer

A microbrewery set up in the shadow of Croagh Patrick was named for St Patrick’s own brewer. Using its own spring water and only natural ingredients it has created Belgian-style craft beers in Mayo. Established by two practicing veterinarians, Dubliner Cillian Ó Móráin and Belgian national Bart Adons, it is in part, they admit, “a rebellion against the day job” but one that is rapidly coming to a commercial head.
The two, who live in Westport, met while working as animal vets in the UK fifteen years ago. A mutual appreciation of craft beer resulted in the setting up of the microbrewery in 2013, with help from Mayo’s Local Enterprise Office.
Why Mayo?
“There is a sense of the cosmopolitan here as this town and county has attracted many folk from around the country, and around the world, who grew roots and stayed”, said Cillian Ó Móráin.
“The native-born are open and welcoming to these wanderers. In a business context, Mayo County Enterprise Board (now LEO) gave us moral support and a financial boost we could not have succeeded without” he added.
