Indigenous Businesses
Mayo has a strong indigenous enterprise sector with Irish businesses based here competing on a global stage. Companies such as
- Technical work-wear specialist Portwest
- Leading international manufacturer of specialist agricultural farm machinery McHale
- Textiles designer Foxford Woollen Mills
all export high quality goods and services around the world. The indigenous sector relies on Mayo’s high quality transport network and the ease of distribution and access to markets this facilitates.
According to a survey carried out by Mayo County Council, more than 75% of companies based in Mayo predict their business will grow over the next 12 months.
The indigenous manufacturing industry here spans food, drink, med-tech, engineering and agricultural products and is the primary motor of growth in Mayo’s economy.
This is enabled by the infrastructure in Mayo such as:
- An international airport
- Good passenger and freight rail services
- Opportunity for research collaboration with Galway Mayo Institute of Technology and National University of Ireland Galway
- Quality water readily available for large enterprise
- Reliable gas, electrical and broadband services
