Get Ireland Walking
Get Ireland Walking is a national initiative that aims to maximise the number of people participating in walking - for health, wellbeing and fitness - throughout Ireland. They aim to:
- Promote the benefits of walking
- Unify and enable the efforts of all recreational, sporting and health promotion agencies and associations interested in promoting walking
- Increase awareness and encourage widespread participation in walking
- Identify and support all existing walking groups
- Support the development of new walking groups
- Encourage and inspire those that wish to be independent walkers
The Active Community Walking Programme aims to support the creation of vibrant walking communities throughout Ireland and Mayo.
The programme works with communities to increase the capacity and potential of people with low levels of physical activity to become more active through walking. This, in turn, will lead to increased numbers of people participating in walking throughout Ireland.
One of the themes within Get Ireland Walking's Strategy and Action Plan 2017-2020 is communities. All communities are different and different approaches are needed to promote sustained walking behaviour.
Currently we have 14 active Community Walking Groups in Mayo
