Poetry Day, an initiative of Poetry Ireland, is a time to appreciate and support all types of poets, this national day celebrates Ireland’s rich history of poetry and prose. There are limitless ways for individuals, organisations and schools to join in!  Poets are invited to read and share their work to audiences in communities and schools.  Children are introduced to poetry in classrooms and given the opportunity to learn different types of poetry.  

In 2020 Poetry Day Ireland takes place on Thursday, April 30.  Mayo Arts Service has celebrated Poetry Day in a number of ways over the past few years, including; 

  • 2020 – Upcoming poet, Sioda Monaghan and Poets Alice Kinsella and Martin Dyar read on Mid West Radio. 

  • 2019 - Mayo Arts Service and Mayo Day, in partnership with Poetry Ireland, provided a poetry and art workshop to four primary schools in the Castlebar Municipal District with Mayo poet Terry McDonagh and Mayo Art Squad Artist, Rónán Quigley. 

  • 2016– Poets Michelle O’Sullivan and Seán Lysaght, read some of their poetry on Tommy Marren’s show on Midwest radio 

  • 2013 - Mayo Arts Service hosted two poetry workshops in Coláiste Pobail Acla with Poet Geraldine Mitchell.  The Poetry Tree was turned into a poetry book by artist Louisa Sloan. 

  • 2010 - Mayo County Council Arts Service & Library Service invited Achill born poet John F. Deane and Dublin based poet Anne Le Marquand Hartigan gave poetry readings in Castlebar Library. 

  • 2008 - Irish Poet Louis de Paor gave an an intimate lunchtime poetry reading in Mayo County Library. Later that evening Galway based, Kevin Higgins, Terry McDonagh, Noel Monaghan’s, Aoife Casby, Ger Reidy and Maighread Medbh read.
