Kayaking
Mayo’s lakes and rivers are so alluring that most towns now have at least one company offering kayak rentals and tuition.
The real magic can be found amidst the 365 tiny islands of Clew Bay (kayaking there, with the totemic form of Croagh Patrick rising behind, will stir your soul). There are still a few hardy farmers occupying some of the islands – and an encounter with one is something to savour.
Blueways is a network of snorkelling and kayaking trails which guide you safely along our most glorious stretches of coastline. These activities are bringing the beauties of Mayo’s coast to a whole new generation of visitors.
Each Blueway offers a route through to the pristine Atlantic Ocean, promising encounters with seals, soaring sea-stacks and perhaps even a sunfish. It’s an almost spiritual sea experience - challenging, exhilarating, relaxing and inspiring.
Trail maps, safety details and information on equipment hire and tuition are available at each location.
Half-day kayak rental costs in the region of €45 or €70 for full day with guide. Blueway locations can be found at Killary Fjord in Leenane, Keem Bay on Achill Island and Old Head near Louisburgh
