Mayo is a perfect county for exploring and enjoying the wonderful coastline which is dotted with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. 

Many of the county’s beaches are perfect for walking, swimming and a variety of watersports. From Ross Strand in North Mayo to Silver Strand near Louisburgh, Keem Bay in Achill and Elly Bay near Belmullet, there is always a beautiful beach to explore in Mayo. 

Mayo's Beach Byelaws have been updated, effective from June 1st 2022. We now have some restrictions on dogs on Blue Flag and potential Blue Flag beaches, in keeping with the demands of the International Blue Flag Jury. Dogs are not permitted in the Blue Flag areas of the beaches during the summer bathing season between the hours of 12:00-18:30, (exemptions detailed in the byelaws).

  • To access the most up to date information on bathing water quality in County Mayo, go to https://www.beaches.ie/. Information is updated throughout the bathing water season, which runs from the 1st June to the 15th September each year.  

     

  • Beach Bye Laws for Mayo can be viewed by clicking here.

    These bye laws came in to effect from June 1st 2022

  • Mayo County Council can enforce vehicle parking on beaches and can take appropriate action against people who park caravans or campervans illegally in non-designated public areas.

  • A Beach wheel chair for Keel Beach is now available. The chair should be booked with Achill Tourism on 098 20400. After booking the chair can be collected from the lifeguard station on Keel Beach with availability during lifeguard duty hours.

    Mayo County Council now have four all-terraine beach wheelcharis and wheelchair mats available for Blue Flag Beach users.

    Beach wheelchairs can be booked in advance in Achill through Achill Tourism by calling: (098 ) 20400 or by emailing manager@achilltourism.com. Beach wheelchairs can also be booked in advance through Mayo County Council by calling (094) 9064861.

  • Explore Your Shore! is calling on members of the public to get involved by submitting their records of intertidal and coastal animals and plants via ExploreYourShore.ie. The project is also asking the public to survey specific habitats and species using a suite of online surveys. 

     

  • Mayo County Council can issue licences to owner/operators of caravan parks and campsites.

  • People wishing to engage in leisure and sporting activities on public beaches must apply to their local council for a Beach Activity Permit.

  • Each year, local authorities are required to designate official bathing areas so that they can be monitored for safety, water quality and their level of use. A public consultation period is held each year, during which submissions can be made to the local authority. This period generally runs from May to July each year. Keep an eye on Mayo County Council’s social media accounts for updates on this.
