Ballintubber Abbey

One of Irelands oldest surviving Abbey founded in 1216 by King of Connaught Cathal O’Connor. The story of the Abbey pre-dates its existence dating back to 441AD, with links going back to pre-Christian times and has close associations with St Patrick. The Abbey has played a pivotal role across the centuries contributing in no small way to the culture and heritage not only of Mayo, but Ireland. It is located along the chariot trail, the ancient pilgrim path used by St Patrick to reach Ireland’s sacred mountain, Croagh Patrick.
