Mayo County Council Climate Action Plan 2024 - 2029 Year 1 Progress Report

Dear Citizen,

In February of 2024 Mayo County Council adopted its Climate Action Plan. Over the following 12 months we were reminded of the impacts of climate change. In January 2025 thousands of Mayo citizens were left without power after Mayo’s worst storm in decades in Storm Eowyn. This was preceded by storm Darragh in December and extreme snowfall in November which again left citizens without power.

These extreme events were also matched with the annual temperature for 2024 at Knock airport being 0.5 degrees higher than it’s long term average, Belmullet experienced its warmest January on record with a temperature of 15.4 °C, Knock airport had its wettest August on record and Newport its second wettest on record.

These are not records we wish to be setting but they demonstrate the importance of our Climate Action Plan and that we must all work together to Future Proof Mayo.

Over the last year we have begun the implementation of the actions in the Climate Action Plan under the strategic objectives of

  1. Future Proof our Council (FP Council)
  2. Future Proof our Place (FP Place)
  3. Future Proof our Community (FP Community)

Transparency and accountability are key principles of delivering on our Climate Action Plan. To that end using PowerBI we have developed an interactive app for the public to review the year 1 progress on our 29 actions and 99 corresponding KPI’s.

Below is a brief example of some of the progress achieved in year 1:

  • Mayo Co. Co. has reduced its CO2 emissions by 27% since baseline year of 2018.
  • Over €645,000 funding provided to local community groups for Community Climate Action projects
  • The sod was turned and construction has begun on the Crossmolina flood relief scheme.
  • Over 200 community groups engaged with on Future proofing projects and initiatives
  • 87 NZEB residential homes delivered
  • Leading in Climate Action is a Strategic Goal in Mayo County Council Corporate Plan 2024-2029

To view the full progress please click the link below. Please note while compiling the data we recognised that there was duplication of reporting so we have combined action 19&26 together and 25&27 together to ensure there is no double accounting.

With 90% of our actions in progress I am proud of what we achieved to date. However I am aware that there is a lot more to do and that the road ahead of us will have plenty of challenges but the local authority staff, along with our elected members and other stake holders are fully committed to building a bright future for county Mayo. One that is not only sustainable but one that the next generation and generations after that will inherit with pride in what we have done.

Signed:

Kevin Kelly
