Project Description 

The N5 road project stretches from northwest of Westport in the townland of Deerpark East to a point East of Castlebar in the townland of Ballyneggin . The design of the N5 mainline is a Type 2 Dual Carriageway with major junctions proposed at the intersection of the N59, existing N5, N84 and N60. 

The  development includes the following; 

20.3 Kilometres of Type 2 Dual Carriageway 

5.2 Kilometres of Type 2 Single Carriageway 

3 compact grade separated junctions including overbridges 

6 roundabouts 

2 at grade “left in-left out” junctions and 1 all movements at grade junction 

1 bridge widening over the Castlebar River 

2 rail bridges over the Westport to Manulla Junction railway line 

11 overbridges, 2 underbridges and 7 farm underpasses 

Other associated works 

Current Project Phase 

The project is currently at Phase 7 (Complete) of the TII Project Management Guidelines.  

Construction commenced in January 2020 and the road was  officially opened to traffic in June 2023.
