Mayo Arts Service Publishing Talk for Mayo writer takes place Saturday the 26th of November 2022 in Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar from 11.30 to 1.30pm. This talk will be followed by a limited number of 30 minute one on one slots with the publishers from 2.30 to 4pm.

Join Publisher Mariel Deegan of New Island Books, Publisher Matthew Parkinson-Bennett from Little Island and Publishers Lisa Frank and John Walsh of Doire Press, who will give a talk on working with publishers.  Gain an insight into what publishers are looking for, the best way to approach publishers and get tips from these top publishers.  This is an opportunity for established or emerging Mayo writers to come along and gain the expertise of the publishers. 

Publisher Mariel Deegan is General Manager of New Island Books who commission in the areas of both fiction, and general interest non-fiction, particularly history, biography and memoir, and humour. They aim to give a platform to promising debut writers like John Patrick McHugh and Marianne Lee, as well as providing a stable home for established authors such as Dermot Bolger, Nuala O’Connor and Andrew Meehan. Some of their standout fiction successes in the last few years have included Nora, a fictionalised account of the life of Nora Barnacle, and Tatty, which was also selected as the Dublin: One City, One Book.Read more about New Island Books. HERE.

Matthew Parkinson-Bennett is Publisher at Little Island Books, an independent Irish publisher specialising in books for young readers, from toddlers up to older teens. Little Island looks for the best new Irish writing and illustration for young readers and has launched the careers of some of Ireland’s leading children’s authors such as Deirdre Sullivan, Meg Grehan and Sheena Wilkinson, as well as publishing established names like Eoin Colfer, Patricia Forde and Little Island’s own founder, former children’s laureate Siobhán Parkinson.  Read more about Little Island Books HERE.

John Walsh was born in Derry, he is co-director and commissioning editor of Doire Press. Doire Press is a small award-winning publisher based in Connemara, publishing high-quality Irish poetry and short-story collections with an emphasis on emerging writers.He spent many years living in Germany before moving to Connemara in 1989. He is a poet and fiction writer and has three poetry collections published and a short story collection. He has read in Ireland, the UK, Germany, Sweden and the United States. Read more about Doire Press HERE.

Lisa Frank was born in Los Angeles but lived in the Pacific Northwest for many years before moving to Ireland in 2007. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University and worked as a literary editor from 2002 to 2010, as well as having taught English and creative writing to a variety of students, including University undergrads and inmates at a medium security mens’ prison. She is co-director and layout designer for Doire Press and is the editor of Galway Stories as well as co-editor of Belfast Stories. Doire Press was founded by Lisa Frank and John Walsh. 

One on One’s: Those wishing to avail of a 30 minute mentoring slot with a publisher should contact Mayo Arts Service to book their place.  You will need to submit no more than 15 pages of your work/ or no more than 3 poems to Mayo Arts Service.  Please specify which publisher who would like to meet with.
