  • The Regional Waste Management Planning Offices and Mayo County Council have teamed up to host a FREE Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day in Mayo on 16th November.
  • The initiative comes as over 50% of people in Ireland say they’re concerned about handling household hazardous materials.
  • Citizens can dispose for free household hazardous items such as paints (10 can/tub limit per person), cleaners, pesticides, automotive fluids, and more.

Worried about that half-empty bottle of weed killer lurking in your garage? You're not alone! A recent survey found that over 50% of people in Ireland are concerned about handling hazardous household materials. But hold onto your hats, Mayo, because help is here!

Funded by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, the Regional Waste Management Planning Offices and Mayo County Council are teaming up to host a FREE Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, 16th November, from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Mayo County Council’s Car Park (adjacent to Knock N.S. F12 KF89), Knock, Co. Mayo.

That's right, you can finally say goodbye to those potentially harmful products taking up space under your sink and in your shed. Some of the most common household hazardous products include oil-based paints, bleach, herbicides, and aerosols.

The collection day will accept household items that contain potentially harmful components. Please ONLY bring the following items:

  • Household Chemicals: Disinfectants, detergents, bleach, oven cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, and other potent cleaning agents.
  • Personal Care Products: Nail polish, nail polish remover, aerosols, and other chemical-based cosmetic products.
  • Garden Chemicals: Pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical treatments used in lawn and garden care.
  • Paints: Leftover paint with a hazardous waste symbol. Please note water-based paint is not hazardous. Let it harden and dispose of it in your general waste bin.
  • Solvents: varnishes, thinners, strippers, inks, glues, resins, and other solvent-based products.
  • Automotive Products: Used motor oil, petrol, diesel, antifreeze, surface polish, and other automotive fluids.

Important Reminders:

  • This collection is for household hazardous waste only. Commercial/farm waste CANNOT be accepted.
  • Medicines and gas canisters will not be accepted.
  • There's a 10 can/tub limit per person for leftover paint.
  • Please plan your visit accordingly, as materials cannot be left outside of the collection hours 10am – 2pm on Saturday, 16th November.

Sharon Cameron, Environment Awareness Officer with Mayo County Council, encourages householders to avail of the hazardous waste event, ‘This is a great opportunity for householders in Mayo to dispose of hazardous waste safely. Many everyday items we use in our homes can cause serious pollution, if not stored or disposed of correctly. We encourage householders to have a look in their cupboards and sheds and gather up items of hazardous waste and to bring them along to the free collection event’.

"Mishandled hazardous waste can be dangerous for our environment and our health," says Carol Sweetnam of the Regional Waste Management Planning Offices. "This event is all about making it easy for householders to do the right thing and dispose of these materials safely. It’s really important that hazardous products are not placed in the general waste bin.”

Don't miss this chance to properly dispose of your household hazardous waste for FREE! Just remember to bring items in their original containers with legible original labels. For a complete list of accepted materials, visit www.mywaste.ie
