Winners Of Schools ‘No Idling’ Clean Air Week Poster Competition Announced
Date: 29-11-2024
To celebrate An Taisce’s Clean Air Week 2024 which takes place this week, Mayo County Council and Green-Schools recently held a Poster Design Competition for schools across Mayo.
The theme of the Poster Design Competition was ‘No Idling’ and entries were received from schools right across the county. Engine idling is any time your car engine is running but you’re not moving, usually for more than 10-20 seconds. e.g. waiting outside school, at roadworks, parked at beauty spots, etc.
The overall winner of the poster competition was Danny Gibbons, 4th class from Belmullet Senior NS, with Kate Gallagher, 3rd class from Tooreen NS and Alyssa Gardiner, 6th class from Mulranny NS both being highly commended for their entries.
Laura Dixon, Climate Action Coordinator for Mayo County Council commended all the school children and their teachers for their entries saying: “It was fantastic to see so many entries from schools right across the county. The imagination and creativity of all the entries to get the message across was outstanding and it was a very difficult task to pick out the winner.”
Green-Schools Travel Officer, Lukasz Krzywon congratulated the schools and highlighted that "turning off the engine is one of the simplest actions drivers can take to reduce their climate impact while also helping to keep our air clean. It was great to see how engaged the school children were with the issue and protecting our environment for the future.”
The winning schools will receive a €100 prize, and the winning poster design will be printed and distributed to interested schools, community groups, and sports clubs throughout the county to address engine idling hotspots.
Mayo County Council are also running a no-idling ad on social media and in local cinemas to further spread the message for Clean Air week.
