Public Arts Commission: Irishtown

Mayo County Council in collaboration with Irishtown Community Council and Irishtown Community Development Ltd. is delighted to announce a public art opportunity in Irishtown Village, County Mayo.  This commission is an exciting opportunity for an artist(s) to work in a historic village with a strong community spirit.  Proposals are welcome from both individuals and collaborative artistic teams. 

The village of Irishtown (Baile Gaelach) is in the south of county Mayo along the R328 regional road close to the Galway and Roscommon borders.  The area has a rich history associated with Michael Davitt, the Land League and the famine.  The local community took part in a survey about their village and the community which has helped shape this Public Art Commission Brief. 

This commission is part of Mayo County Council’s Public Art Programme, funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage under the Per Cent for Art Scheme.  The purpose of the Per Cent for Art Scheme is to commission artists to create new work.  Proposed outcomes can be ephemeral, temporary or semi-permanent in nature.  This is a two-stage open competition for professional practicing artists / arts teams working in all artforms and recipients will be selected based on their submission.

There will be a site visit for artists on Saturday 27th November 2021.  Artists do not have to attend this if they are unable to and are welcome to apply for the commission regardless of their attendance.  The site visit will be in accordance with current Covid-19 guidelines.  Booking is required.  Those interested can register by emailing Aoife O’Toole, Acting Public Art Coordinator on aotoole@mayococo.ie.  The application deadline is the 10th January 2022.
