Ireland West Airport
Ireland West Airport is an international airport 5km outside of Charlestown. It was opened in October, 1985, following a campaign by Monsignor James Horan aimed at bringing more people to visit Knock Shrine. By 1988 over 100,000 passengers had passed through and in 2023 the airport had it’s busiest ever year with 818,000 passengers passing through.
A Strategic Development Zone is to be created at the airport, the only one of it’s kind outside of a major urban area in Ireland.
-
McMahon Park
Known as McMahon Park-Clare Lake, the amenity owes it’s creation to the visionary ideals of local Claremorris teenagers, members of the Foroige Youth group, and the McMahon family whose donation of land in 1989 made the dream of a town park possible. Clare Lake is popular with walkers, joggers and anglers with it’s almost 5km walking/running route and a lake filled with pike, perch and eel.
A feature of the park is the Land of the Giants trail for children. This features several oversized attractions along the walking route including a Lego Dinosaur, giant red chair and oversized geometry set.
