Library Biodiversity Embankment

Community gardening projects have contributed a great deal to the collective quality of life over the last decade, sometimes in unexpected ways. Their contribution towards community interaction is strengthened by community gardening’s inclusivity. Gardening is one of the few activities that people from all walks of life can engage in. Their benefit was seen greatly during the Covid-19 lockdowns, where they afforded people an opportunity to meet and still to be socially distanced.

In September 2019 a group of volunteers, some from the Quay community garden, decided to start a project on an area close to Westport Library, to create a biodiverse embankment. The aim for the area is that 50%+ of it is plants and flowers that aid biodiversity.

The embankment boasts edible fruits such as apples and strawberries and vegetabes such as artichokes and a variety of different herbs. Volunteers have also created the unique feature of a chamomile path. The meadow section of the area has mainly been planted with biodiverse spring bulbs and wild seed mixes.
