Who is the Physical Activity for Health Programme for?


Have you got a long-term health condition?

  • Age related deconditioning

Are you starting out on your exercise journey?

  • You want to get started but don’t know how or what to do?
  • You haven’t played any sports or games in years?
  • You have been advised by a health professional to get more active?
  • Your find some of your day-to-day activities a little more difficult?
  • You want to participate in social activities but feel post-Covid you are less able?

What should you be aiming to do?

  • Some physical activity is better than none, more is better than some,
  • and any amount of physical activity you do results in health benefits.
  • You can count shorter bouts of activity towards the guidelines. These bouts
  • should last for at least 10 minutes.

Recommended Guidelines:

At Least 30 minutes a day of moderate activity on 5 days a week or 150 minutes a week.

Aerobic exercise: causes you to get breathless, and your heart rate to go up. 2–3 days per week - Add activities which increase muscular strength and endurance.

Strength resistance exercise: Exercise bands, lifting weights, Pilates,

Example: COPD, a common lung complaint, is a chronic disease. It will never go away but there are actions you can take to manage your COPD that will give you the best possible quality of life. This is important because:

  • You do less activity
  • You become afraid of activity that makes you breathless.
  • Your muscles become weaker
  • You avoid the activities that make you breathless.

How can you get started?

  • Tell you GP or specialist nurse practitioner you want to exercise.
  • Get the Ok from them.
  • Contact us.
  • We will guide you to an appropriate class.
