Achill Missionary Herald
The Achill Colony was located close to the village of Dugort. It was built on land, which was leased from Sir Richard O Donnell, the island's Landlord. The missionary settlement which consisted of both male and female schools was completed in 1834. Edward Nangle, his wife Eliza and family moved to the completed settlement which also boasted a minister’s house, a hotel, church and printing works. While the objective of the colony was to be self-sufficient it did rely on subscriptions from the Protestant community at home and abroad. Communication with the outside world was through the columns of The Achill Missionary Herald. The Herald was published monthly from 1837 to 1868. During this time Nangle edited and contributed to the publication. It is a valuable and interesting record from this period The following editions of The Achill Missionary Herald are available and can be read by clicking the links below.
