Daring Dames – From Pirate Queen to Pioneering Doctor

Come and celebrate the wonderful women of Mayo with us as part of Mayo Day 2025.

From Queens and Goddesses to writers and  world renowned scientists - over the centuries Mayo has produced a notable band of proud and pioneering women.

In entertaining historical talks, music, walkabout characters and storytelling for all the family, this day of Daring Dames illuminates these extraordinary lives, their triumphs and challenges, and puts their fabulous stories firmly on the Mayo map..

Running Order

11.30am: Meet the magical talking Gráinne Bear and here about her extraordinary adventures. Storytelling session for all the family in the historic barn. 

12.30pm: Guided tour of Belleek castle focusing on the remarkable life of Joyce Doran. Watch out for the ghost of Lottie Lampshade!

2pm: Talk on Rebel Doctor Kathleen Lynn (1874-1955), one of Ireland’s first female physicians who took an active part in the 1916 Rising by Dr Yvonne McDermott

3.30pm: Guided tour of Belleek castle focusing on the life of Joyce Doran. With the ghost of Lottie Lampshade!

5pm: Talk by Ballina’s award winning novelist and playwright Kate Kerrigan – ‘Home is where the heart is. Growing up as a Mayo girl in London.’ 

All day 16th century stiltwalker in residence at the Castle and folk music in the beautiful Courtyard.
