Mayo County Council Celebrates Sustainable Urban Spaces and Invites Ideas for Park(ing) Day-Inspired Events

Mayo County Council is proud to highlight its ongoing commitment to sustainability and community-focused public space initiatives in the spirit of Park(ing) Day 2024, which takes place on Friday 20th September. Park(ing) Day, celebrated globally and as part of European Sustainable Mobility Week, transforms parking spaces into temporary public areas, showcasing how these spaces can be creatively reimagined for community use.

Throughout the year, Mayo County Council has championed similar initiatives by supporting temporary transformations of public parking areas. This summer, car parks in Ballinrobe were repurposed to host the Ballinrobe Festival.

The 2024 Ballinrobe Festival, which utilised the Abbey Street Car Park for family fun days and an open air concert with fireworks, welcomed large crowds which included locals and returning diaspora.

Our municipal district is committed to supporting public events where possible in sustainable public spaces in Hollymount, Shrule, Cong, Cross and The Neale. The Local Heritage Event held in the Neale in 2021 at the local ball alley celebrated past Heritage and the appeal of local and public spaces for community events.

These events reflect the key goals of Park(ing) Day, which is to highlight how parking spaces can serve as dynamic, people-centred environments that align with our sustainability and community values.

These efforts are part of Mayo County Council’s broader strategy to promote sustainable mobility, reduce carbon emissions, and reimagine the role of public spaces in fostering vibrant, connected communities.

Looking ahead, Mayo County Council is inviting community groups to submit their ideas for transforming parking spaces into temporary public areas for future events. The Council encourages creative proposals that enhance community life while supporting our sustainability goals.
