NOAC Report shows Mayo County Council improved performance in a number of service areas in 2021

Mayo County Council improved its performance across a range of indicators during 2021, despite Covid-19 and other challenges.

Mayo County Council continued to deliver essential services throughout 2021 and also provided a range of new supports and grants to the public and businesses during the pandemic, including community resilience and wellbeing supports and changes to the public realm in the interests of public health and safety and local businesses.

The Performance Indicators Report 2021 shows the performance of services across 11 areas carried out by the Council.

At the end of 2021, Mayo County Council owned 2276 social housing units, having added 34 units to our housing stock in 2021 with the % of vacant housing stock at the end of 2021 standing at just under 4%.
In 2021, the number of inspections of private rented dwellings (including re-inspections) undertaken by Mayo County Council was 682.
Total regional and local roads improvement and maintenance expenditure increased by almost €3.2million to €24.07million in 2021 and the total kilometres of roads strengthened and resealed was 452km in 2021.
There was a 16% increase in new builds notified to Mayo County Council, increasing to 511 in 2021.
Of the 36 Mayo County Council planning decisions appealed to An Bord Pleanála in 2021 the Council’s decision was upheld in 26.
As Mayo County Council continues to focus on energy efficiency and climate targets, the number of LED lights in the public system stands at 6099 at end of 2021.
In 2021, 67.14% of the registered private water schemes in County Mayo were monitored by the local authority.
The percentage of the area within the local authority area that when surveyed was unpolluted or litter free increased from 39% in 2020 to 48% in 2021.
In the case of fire, the average time taken to mobilise the fire brigade in part-time stations in Mayo 2021 was 5.21 minutes. The number of call outs to fires reduced by 78 to 347 in 2021 with the number of call outs to other emergencies increasing by 62 to 314.
Due to closures and restrictions under public health measures, the libraries experienced a drop in the number of in person visits in 2021. However, there was a 2% increase from 2020 of items issued to library customers in 2021 which totalled 268,816 items.
85% of motor tax transactions were conducted online during 2021 which was an increase of almost 5% from 2020.
In 2021, almost 77% of local secondary schools were involved in the local Youth Council/Comhairle na nÓg scheme.
In 2021, the number of jobs created with the assistance of Mayo County Council’s Local Enterprise Office (LEO) was 46.
There were almost 1.4 million visits to Council websites and our social media following increased by 16% to 208,921 users in 2021.

Commenting on the report, Chief Executive Kevin Kelly, paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of Mayo County Council employees, saying:

“Mayo County Council continued to provide hundreds of services throughout 2021 while at the same time, we played a vital role in the national response to the pandemic, supporting communities, businesses and the local economy.

We are continually seeking to improve services and increase efficiency and having made progress in a range of areas last year we intend to build on this and will continue to innovate and deliver quality public services.”
