Perspectives on Home – Exploring Objects from County Mayo
Date: 09-06-2021
Perspectives on Home took place this year over the course of eight weeks with artist and folklorist Michael Fortune and people from County Mayo. As part of the online project, the group took photographs of old keepsakes and items of interest ranging from old farmyard tools, dressers, grottos and gardens and shared stories behind the photographs.
The project result in the production of a new body of photographs and recorded conversations based on the groups stories and photographs.
100's of photos were taken alongside Michael documenting objects around their homes, villages and towns during the 5km Covid lockdown. Amazing objects and stories emerged every week over the two months and objects ranged from old farming tools to local currach designs and from religious shrines to family heirlooms.
On May 21st Mayo County Council Arts Service hosted a virtual tour of the photographs where participants joined to tell their stories behind the objects and sites. The tour was presented as part of the Bealtaine Festival, celebrating creativity as we age.
