Artist Profile: Tubber Hill Public Art Project
Cathal McCarthy (Lead artist)
Cathal Mc Carthy has a rich and varied experience of working with community groups including artists residencies in group contexts in Ireland and internationally UK and France. He has completed a range of percent for art projects for various Co Councils, Educational Establishments and Commissioners. He previously trained with Macnas Community Theatre Galway and specialised in art creation for people with disabilities. He has a broad range of skills in visualising, making and fabrication of sculpture and other art forms. He is currently working on a new socially engaged sculpture projects with young people in Offaly, Wexford, Dublin and Bavaria in Germany.
Mc Carthy from Ballintubber is well known for creating iconic public art pieces and recently completed a new sculpture for Sancta Maria Secondary School in Louisburgh. His other sculptures include Stream Spire, Mullingar Town and The Player in Ballindine on the N17.
Mary C Reilly (Collaborating artist)
Mary C Reilly is a published poet and author from Tubber Hill. She has published two volumes of poetry “The woman who cries songs” (2014) and “Only speak in Flowers” (2016). She has an honours degree in literature and philosophy from NUIG Galway along with a higher diploma in Education. She previously worked in theatre and arts in Galway and taught English in the UK for 15 years. She has been involved in the arts in Westport since 2007 in several community-based art projects notable Westport Arts Festival and presenting “The Arts Show on Westport Radio. She has taken part in readings at Westival Arts Festival and many open mic events. She recently read her work as part of the Solas sessions for you tube in association with Westport Town Hall. She met Cathal Mc Carthy some time ago through a mutual artist friend in Westport and shares a similar interest in Haiku poetry.
