Beach Lifeguard

We employ Beach/Pool Lifeguards at 10 of the most popular outdoor locations for water-based activities in the county during the summer months.

Our beach lifeguards are on duty each day until September 1st at the following locations:

Carrowniskey, Carrowmore, Old Head, Bertra, Ross (Killala), Keem, Keel, Silver (Dugort), Mulranny - (12pm to 6.30pm at each beach location). Please see note below.

Our pool lifeguards are at Belmullet Tidal Pool each day from 12pm to 7pm.

Mayo County Council provides Ringbuoys at 547 locations in Co. Mayo and these are constantly inspected and monitored by Council staff in all Municipal Districts. The extreme weather conditions along the Atlantic coast occasionally results in coastal erosion and creates the necessity to replace ringbuoys and safety information signage when necessary at certain locations.  If there are any reports of missing or damaged ringbuoys, rope, attachments etc, please log this on www.watersafety.ie/ringbuoys

The Beach Lifeguards are normally on duty from 12:00 noon to 6:30 p.m. daily during the Bathing Season.

However, circumstances beyond our control occasionally arise which means that some beaches may not be lifeguarded at these times.

Accordingly, people visiting the beaches should check to see that the Lifeguards on duty flags are raised as this is the only way to be certain that the beach is lifeguarded at any time.

  • Red & Yellow Flag - Fifeguards on duty - safe to swim
  • Red Flag - Lifeguards on duty - unsafe to swim
  • No Flag - Lifeguards not on duty
