All-Ireland Pollinator Plan
The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan (AIPP) is a strategy that works to support the decline of pollinators including our 98 bee species, one-third of which are threatened with extinction.
Mayo County Council signed up as a partner to the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan in May 2019.
We work to support the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan through our work with communities and local authority staff and hosting workshops and talks on the Plan. Please keep an eye on our event section for information on upcoming events.
The Heritage Office is working with communities throughout the county to help them to make their local areas more pollinator-friendly, through implementing changes in vegetation management, grass cutting regimes, and planting plans. We have also hosted a number of information talks and workshops throughout the county.
Our 'Growing for Biodiversity Workshop' Series, held in 2019 was a great success. Funded by the Department of Culture heritage and the Gaeltacht, under the National Biodiversity Plan, the workshops were attended by representatives of 10 communities. We continue to work with these communities to assist them in implementing pollinator-friendly actions and projects in their local areas.
If you would like to find out more or become a “pollinator-friendly community” please contact the Heritage Office.
Local Authority Pollinator Award
The Local Authority Pollinator Award aims to encourage Tidy Towns groups to implement pollinator-friendly actions in their towns and villages as part of the Tidy Towns competition. It supports the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and is coordinated and sponsored by the Heritage Offices and Biodiversity Offices of Local Authorities across Ireland, in partnership with the National Biodiversity Data Centre.
