Transatlantic Cable
County Mayo is the landfall location for a transcontinental data communication fibre cable linking the USA with Europe.
The first cable known as America-Europe Connect (AEC-1) was successfully connected in Killala Bay, North Mayo in 2015.
A second cable known as America-Europe Connect 2 (AEC-2) is seeking permission to make landfall in Clew Bay at Oldhead, close to Westport.
The subsea cables are owned and operated by Irish company Aqua Comms, which support global data centres, cloud-based networks and content providers.
