Active Age
Go For Life Games
The aim of the Go for Life Games is to involve older people in recreational sport.
The games are run with the support of Local Sports Partnerships and the HSE. It involves friendly games, Leagues, and the National Games which are held annually over one day. The Mayo Sports Partnership are organising a number of 'Blitz' sessions in Mayo to coincide with this and get a Mayo Team together.
The Go for Life Games involve three sports that can be played in singles, pairs and teams:
-
MÁLAÍ- an adaption of the game of Cornhole
-
Flisk- adaption of Frisbee and Horseshoe Pitching
-
Scidil-adaption of Ten-Pin Bowling and Skittles
Pickleball
Pickleball is tennis on a badminton court. Every town and village in Ireland have badminton courts in school sports halls, and community centres to small church. So, if you have a badminton court you’re ready to go!
We use specialised paddles and balls and there are a few good rules that make it a very unique sport.
Pickleball Ireland was set up to introduce and develop this fabulous new sport to the island of Ireland. Mayo Sports Partnership offer Pickleball as one of its active age programmes and it’s proving to be very popular.
Aqua Fit
Aqua Fit is a challenging water workout, fit for everyone. The class begins with a gentle warm-up in 79-85 degree water. From there, you'll ease into the exercises using your own body weight and water resistance dumbbells.
Unlike aerobics on land, Aqua Fit is low-impact and the cushioning effect of the water protects joints in the spine, ankle, hip and knee. It is suitable for people of all ages and abilities as participants can work at a variety of levels by increasing effort.
Aqua Fit classes take place in the shallow end of the pool so although you need to have some confidence in the water you do not need to be a great swimmer to take part.
Classes are great fun and exercises are done in time to music.
Mayo Sports Partnership, in conjunction with Lough Lannagh Sports Complex, offer Aqua fit classes to active age.
Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking is the latest innovation in fitness walking and in Ireland there is growing interest in 'using the sticks for a fitness fix'. It can be done on virtually any outdoor terrain including tarred roads, concrete paths, forestry trails, sandy beaches, and grassy parks.
Nordic Walking transforms 'normal' walking (where most of the work is done by the legs) into a complete body workout! Studies have found that the correct use of poles can involve up to 80% of the body's muscles and burn as much as 40% more calories than 'normal' walking.
The use of the poles brings other improvements with less speed including:
- improving posture
- strengthening core muscles
- reducing impact of landing
- enhancing mobility of neck and shoulders
