Safe Routes to School Project - Traffic & Pedestrian Surveys
Notice is hereby given that Nationwide Data Collection, specialists in data collection services for transport planning and traffic engineering will conduct on behalf of the Active Travel Section, Mayo County Council a traffic survey count for vehicular, pedestrian and cycle traffic for the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programme. The following schools are progressing under bundle one of the programme:
- Brackloon National School, Brackloon, Westport
- Carn National School, Moygownagh, Ballina
- Cong National School, Cong
- Scoil Iosa, Convent Hill, Ballina
The aim of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programme is to alleviate congestion by improving access and safety at the school gates (front of school).
The traffic count survey will aid in the development of improvement to access routes to the schools by improving / implementing new active travel infrastructure.
The survey counts will commence on:
- Monday, 4th November for 14 days - the automatic traffic count survey is to count the number of vehicles communiting on the roads/streets listed below.
- Wednesday, 6th November for a 12-hour period from 07:00 to 19:00 a video camera will be in operation to various types of traffic movement.
The survey routes are:
Brackloon National School - road reference: L1822
CongNational School - road reference: R345
Carn NS - road reference: R315
Scoil iosa - road reference(s): McDermott Street, Fenian Row, Roaches Terrace, Mercy Road
The CCTV recordings are complicant with GDPR legislation. The data gathered will be deleted after a three month period unless there is a legitimate reason for retention.

Castlebar Draft Local Transport Plan
The Draft Local Transport Plan (LTP) for Castlebar went on public display in the early part of 2023. The submission & observation period has closed but details in relation to the draft plan can still be viewed on consult.mayo.ie
Information on the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), which is a statutory process that must be carried out when preparing the LTP can be viewed on the Castlebar Local Transport Plan web page.
The purposed LTP has specific focus on sustainable & active travel, making it easier for people to walk or cycle around the town and have better access to public transport.
Westport Draft Local Transport Plan
Westport Local Transport Plan (LTP) went on public display from 26th September to 7th November 2023. In addition to this a public drop - in consultation session was held on 23rd October 2023 at the Westport Town Hall Theatre. Consultants WSP & Transport Insight who were appointed by Mayo County Council to prepare the draft LTP were available on the evening to discuss the proposed plan.
A number of submissions & observations were received within the prescribed period and all valid submissions will be taken into consideration when formulating the final plan.

Ballina Draft Local Transport Plan
The public submission & observation period for Ballina Local Transport Plan (LTP) closed on the 8th Febraruy 2024 after a 6 week viewing period. In addition to this CSEA Consultants who worked on the draft plan on behalf of Mayo County Council were in attendance at a public consultation meeting held on Wednesday, 31st January 2024 in Ballina Civic Offices. Following on from this consultation period a summary of all valid submissions received will be prepared and details arising from this will be taken into consideration when finalising the plan.
The LTP aims to identify long lasting transport improvements to ensure growing use of sustainable travel modes for work, education, business and visitors trips.

LTP's are high level strategic documents guided by national policies which set out the broad objectives of the current and future transportation modes of individual towns. The LTP's provide an opportunity for public engagement through early consultation. The plans consist of a number of potential transport interventions. Each intervention is expanded upon further through additional public consultation.
